Dr. Gavin Maxwell

Chiropractor

As a competitive athlete for 30 years, Gavin understands what athletes of every stripe need to train and excel no matter whether they are heading out around their block or on to the Olympic stage.

Gavin’s own journey in sport has been as important as his education and professional training to enable him to provide effective therapeutic services and also personal training and coaching to his clients.

His first love was volleyball before trying flat water paddling at the Burloak Canoe Club.  Gavin quickly rose through the paddling ranks.  He competed in four World Championships and won two bronze medals at the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba. The pinnacle of his paddling career was representing Canada at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta where he placed 11th in his individual event.

Although retired from flat water paddling competition, Gavin has never left racing as both a competitor and as a coach.  As a crew member, Gavin won four golds at the IDBF World Dragon Boat championships in Philadelphia in 2001.  As a coach, he pushed Canada’s Premier women’s team to a clean sweep at the 2007 IDBF Worlds in Penrith, Australia and then on to recapture the Women’s Cup at the 2009 Worlds in Prague, Czech Republic.

When he’s not on the water, Gavin approaches his other sports interests- running, cycling, swimming, golf and his first love, volleyball- with the same focus.

Gavin holds a Bachelor in Kinesiology from McMaster University in Hamilton and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto.  He is also certified in Contemporary Acupuncture (McMaster University), Active Release Technique (ART) and the NSCA Certified Personal Trainer program.

Whether he’s treating an Olympic hopeful, a mom or an executive, Gavin encourages his clients to become active partners with their doctors in setting and meeting healthier lifestyle and treatment goals and performing at their chosen sport to the best of their abilities.
